The Catawba Theatre department kicked off its production season this year with the fascinatingly unique radio play “Under Milk Wood: A Play For Voices.” The show was originally meant for a radio audience back in the 1950s and was written by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
In order to make this show more authentic, each night the show’s audio also aired live on Catawba’s website. As many as 200 people listened in each night to the live show and there were listeners from out of the country, including the country of Wales itself and China, listened in to the show.
On Tuesday night, the show was actually broadcast on a local radio station here in Salisbury, WSAT 1280 Memories. To keep the show authentic, each actor had to study and perfect a Welsh accent for the show. The show itself was a simplistic layout with old-fashioned microphones at the front of the stage and sound effect props like a sand box to help create the illusion of ocean waves and shoes walking across the shoreline.
Before the show on Friday, Shakeisha Gray, a Catawba College graduate, was there to answer any questions about the history of the show or about the author, Dylan Thomas.
