On Friday, September 5th at 5:00 in the evening, Blue Masque members from every class lined up outside Hedrick Little Theatre in preparation for the organization’s annual Jell-O fight. The participants, dressed in mostly white, were separated into four randomly selected groups based on colored wrist bands. Each student received Ziploc bags filled with sticky, red gelatin that had been made by Blue Masque senators a couple of days beforehand.

After receiving the necessary supplies, the groups stood on different areas of the lawn in front of the Robertson College-Community Center. They had a few moments to speak with each other about plans of attack before the Blue Masque Service Chair, Lara Williams, counted down and the Jell-O fight began. The atmosphere quickly changed from tense to chaotic as group members ran in every direction, flinging gelatin at the opposing teams. Some students, after running out of Jell-O, turned their bags inside out and wore them as gloves so they could wipe their remaining gelatin on anyone who dared to come near them. As the fight went on, the substance could be seen clinging to hair, dripping down calves, and, most importantly, coating the participants’ white t-shirts.

When the Jell-O was finally gone, each team was made to stand and turn around before a group of Blue Masque board members who judged them based on who was covered in the least amount of red. The team wearing blue wrist bands was declared the winner, and the Blue Masque Secretary, Jean White, was given a prize for being the cleanest person overall.
