Students with intellectual disabilities are often dehumanized in society. You may be wondering how? The term “retard” that is widely used throughout the nation today in a humorous context is actually highly offensive to the Special Needs population. The term “retarded” originated in the medical field. Yet, society has taken a totally different approach to the term and uses it against those with intellectual disabilities. What most members in the local/national community fail to realize is that the term makes the special needs population individualized, as if they are not fit for society.
Special Olympics is a worldwide organization that promotes unity and inclusion by having those with special needs demonstrate talent through sports. These athletes and volunteers around the nation have work tirelessly to promote inclusion within their societies. Special Olympics have created a Spread the Word to End the Word campaign where one can visit their website and pledge to eliminate the use of the word “retard” from their dictionary and encourage others to do as well. We all as members of society need to come together to put a stop to this term that spreads neglect and hate. Therefore, I encourage each individual reading this article to visit the website and sign the pledge. Each individual can make a change so let’s all Spread the word to end the word!
