College is an amazing opportunity to further your education, build lasting relationships, and prepare for your future career. However, in between the hustle and bustle of classes and studying, it is typical of students to become antisocial or inactive on campus.

Catawba College student, Richard Lugo breaks this mold by being the ever-present and always friendly personality within the community, reaching out and offering his assistance in any way he knows how. A senior this year, studying Sociology with a minor in Communication Arts, Lugo wishes to help those in need through his friendship and faith which has made him a prominent figure on campus and an excellent example of a student and leader.
Raised as the child of three in the sunny city of Virginia Beach, Lugo has always maintained close ties to his family, church, and community. Throughout his life, Lugo has been active in a number of activities ranging from academic clubs, dance teams, and youth groups. The common trend between all of these activities being his longingness to grow both socially and spiritually with others.

Music, another major interest, brought Lugo to Catawba College since it is a school known for its acclaimed music programs throughout the southeast region. “When I heard the choir, I know I had to check the school out,” he said reflecting on his decision. He eventually would tour the school and fall in love with the beauty and splendor the campus has to offer. Lugo initially decided upon Psychology but later switched to Sociology because of his interest in people and helping struggling youth find purpose in life.
Lugo’s strong family ties are what keep him happy and grounded. He states that his family members are the most influential people in his life because of the values they instilled in him and continue to practice to this day. “My brother is one of my biggest influences because no matter how badly people treat him, he always tries to look the other way. He works so hard even when he will get nothing in return” Lugo says. As well as his brother, he thanks his parents for supporting him and providing love and kindness when needed. “My parents are kind people. My father brings gifts and helps people in need and my mother NEVER lets anyone mess with her baby,” he said smiling.
Faith plays a pivotal role in Lugo’s life, both aiding him during difficult times and inspiring him to be a leader in and around campus. “I have seen God move since childhood,” he said reflecting on moments in his life that continuously reaffirm his beliefs. Growing up in a Christian household, Lugo was exposed to a wide array of worship settings ranging from the more traditional styles, modernized, and even at home services. “When our church closed down, we did not stop going. We just had church at home because the people are the church, not the building.” Whether it’s a struggling loved one, a stressful week, or even a missing sock, Richard relies heavily on his religion to provide him with the strength and tenacity to carry on.
For the past three years, Lugo has served as a Resident Assistant for both freshman and upperclassmen. “I love the relationships I have formed with my residents. A lot of them have a special place in my heart.” He not only enjoys building lasting connections with other students but getting to help those going through difficult situations as well. He was reminded of a student who locked themselves out of the Salisbury-Rowan dormitory and not knowing what to do, he went to Richard for help. Lugo loves being able to help in any way he can because of his love for the staff, students, and faculty on campus. As he says proudly, “I love my school. I love Catawba College!” We’re pretty sure the feeling is mutual Mr. Richard.
