The Center for the Environment at Catawba College held its Preserve Volunteer Day on Thursday, April 17 in the Stanback Ecological Preserve. Students from various environmental studies courses volunteered their time and effort to help with the distribution of pit gravel and soil along the trail way as well as taking groups through the preserve to pick up debris and garbage around the area.

Catawba students arrived in large numbers to show their support for the center and not only did they bring a helping hand but also a swarm of smiling faces – even with the heat. The group was lead by Dr. John Wear (Executive Director), Matt Hendrix (Work Study Supervisor), and Sarah Moore (Outreach Coordinator) with additional assistance from the environmental stewards. With the students help, the center was able to add more steps leading down to the preserve’s trail way, add pit gravel to the walkway behind the center, and cover the gardens with a new layer of fresh soil.

The faculty at the center were greatly appreciative of the hard work put in by the preserve volunteers and hopes that next year’s Preserve Volunteer Day will be just as spectacular.
