On Friday, October 21, Catawba College introduced its first chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (better known as Sigma Alpha Pi). Since 2001, the organization has integrated itself onto a number of campuses across the nation promoting students strive for achievement in their respective fields and train them to become the future leaders of tomorrow. Senior Payden Mitchell is responsible for founding the first chapter at the school under the advisory of environmental education professor, Dr. Lisa Wear. This year should be a great one for the group considering turnout has been greater than initially expected. “We expected around 35 and ended up with 150,” said Mitchell proudly. The chapter is looking forward to beginning initiatives on campus and helping their members grow into strong, productive members of society.
A number of benefits come from joining the society such as access to a wide array of resources ranging from successful people within perspective fields, exclusive employment and internship positions, and access to over $200,000 in scholarships, among other perks. Students should not join solely for the added benefits however; The National Society of Leadership and Success is meant to aid students as they transition into the workforce by teaching them some of the most important skills employers are looking for. Areas such as communication, team building, problem solving and decision making skills can be learned through the society’s intensive programs to help college students develop the necessary tools to make a great first impression as well as a strong impact in the world at large.
