After traveling around the country for their winter tour, Mipso is returning to their roots for some of the final shows on their current tour. Made up of North Carolinians Jacob Sharp, Wood Robinson, Joseph Terrell, and Libby Rodenbough, Mipso will be making stops in Charlotte, Salisbury, and Wilmington, North Carolina in March. Fiddle player Libby Rodenbough took time to answer some questions about Mipso and their music.

With a variety of influences, Mipso tags their music as a combination of traditional influences and contemporary original songwriting. Citing influences such Mandolin Orange and Chatham County Line, Rodenbough also noted that each member has a unique degree of exposure to traditional southern music. “And throughout our lives, into the present,” Rodenbough said, “we have all listened to lots of different kinds of music. Wood is a jazz lover…I went through a very severe folkie phase…Joseph and Jacob were Phish heads.” All of these influences have combined to form a unique sound infused with their musical roots.

Mipso is getting the word out on this unique sound by taking their tour on the road and working on a new album. “We finished recording a new album at the beginning of this year, and the plan is to put it out in early September,” Rodenbough said of the group’s currently untitled third album. Rodenbough also mentioned that Mipso plans on playing some of the new tunes during their upcoming concerts. “But go easy on us. We’re very sensitive, despite the macho façade,” she joked.

Based out of Chapel Hill, Mipso is always excited to return home and play for a hometown crowd after a few months on the road. On returning to their home state, Rodenbough said, “Touring far and wide has been an undeniably cool experience for us, but there is nothing like playing to familiar faces in our home state. We love North Carolina a whole lot. Salisbury has been one of those places where we’ve been fortunate to cultivate a particularly warm, loyal group of fans.”

As we spring into warmer weather, let’s also give Mipso the warm reception that they have come to love from our Salisbury community!

Mipso will take the stage of Salisbury’s Lee Street Theatre on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Doors open at 7 with opening act, David Childers, beginning at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased from the Lee Street Theatre website. Merchandise will be available at the show, including screen prints featuring a picture of a pirate.
