In honor of Black History Month, Wigwam teamed up with the Catawba College Diversity Club for this past Friday’s event. Students who came to the event got to experience authentic African music. Members of the band, who are originally from Kenya, performed tribal songs on special African drums and other instruments. They also sang songs in their native Kenyan language, Kiswahili.

Along with the musical performances, they also performed traditional dance moves to go along with the songs. The fun beats even got some of the students dancing. Six girls and six guys were called on to the stage to dance along with the music and to dance with one of the performers. The band members also played some modern electric instruments, like the bass guitar, in partnership with the traditional drums, creating a unique sound all their own. Students were also allowed to play on the musical instruments towards the end of the performance.

A lot of the students found it amusing that the performers had trouble pronouncing “Catawba,” but honestly, who does not have trouble pronouncing Catawba the first time they see it? Also, even though there were only three members of the band, their liveliness and audience participation made for a great event.
