Looking for cool activities to do on the weekends but don’t have a car on campus? No problem!
Horizons Unlimited is a local environmental learning center which houses unique exhibits like a small aquarium and a thriving rainforest eco-system. The best part is that this educational center is only about a 5-8 minute walk from campus. The walk varies because you can take the sidewalk and stay on the main roads, or you can take a small shortcut by taking a path through the ecological preserve.
One weekend a month, Horizons Unlimited hosts environmental programs and planetarium shows. The educational programs that start at 3:00 PM are free and can be anything from an Earth Day celebration to a guided walk through the ecological preserve. Starting at 5:00PM, they have educational planetarium shows for $2.00. The first two programs of the day usually help local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops earn badges but are still open to the public. Finally, at 6:30PM, Horizons displays a laser show in the planetarium for $2.00. These shows consist of themed music put to a laser light show in the planetarium dome, much like a fireworks show but with more complex images. Some themes for these shows range from “Laser Beatles” to “Fright night” in October. After the laser show there is a brief display of the nighttime sky for that month and a volunteer for Horizons shows the audience which constellations can be found in the sky that month and how to identify them.
Overall, Horizons Unlimited is a great place to go on the weekends to learn more about the environment we live in and have fun while doing so.
