In the week of February 23rd, Catawba College’s theatre department presented another hit. Eurydice (pronounced “yur-IH-dih-see”) follows the tale of a young woman as she encounters love, death, and the different meanings of life in a quirky story full of symbolism and depth.

The stage setup is a unique way of unifying the themes in the play. The floor of the stage itself is painted to look like a stained-glass ocean while the floor of the first row of seating is painted to look like the rolling tides of a roaring river. Throughout the play, the themes of music and water are most prevalent. Eurydice’s husband, Orpheus, is a musician who constantly reminds her to remember his melody and find the rhythm in the life around them. In death, there is a river that lets the dead rest within oblivious forgetfulness, a state of being that Eurydice’s dead father had fought in order to be able to reach out to his daughter. One of the most touching scenes is when the father reveals that he regained many of his memories when he “heard” Eurydice’s name in the rain.

The director of the play, Dr. Beth Homan, states in the program that “we invite you brave the disorientation and join our Eurydice on her journey through love, death, and grief in all of their many facets.” The path that the story takes you on is a topsy-turvy ride between life and death, love and memory, and the rapids along this particular river really set this production apart.
