The Center for the Environment at Catawba College offers a wide array of opportunities for students. Clubs such as ECO and Campus Greening Association allow for interested students to participate in activities that will enable them to learn more about the environment and benefit their local communities through outreach programs targeted at the citizens of Salisbury and our very own students here at Catawba.

The Environmental Stewards, a scholarship program offered at the college gives students the chance to serve as representatives of the center, helping to influence a change in the attitudes of their peers about the environment and how our everyday actions affect them on a larger scale. Through volunteer work, sponsored social events, outreach initiatives, and campus activism, students who feel strongly about conservation issues can make their voice heard and educate others in the process.

Along with promoting responsible environmental behavior, the Steward program offers students the ability to become acquainted with like-minded people, building communities and lasting friendships. “You meet a diverse group of people with a common goal, it’s a great networking opportunity, and it (the program) allows you to establish relationships with your peers that you would normally not be able to,” says Stewards member, Colleen Smiley.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarship must have a 3.0 GPA (this includes both prospective students and current students), two letters of recommendation, and an essay response. The program does not discriminate, as long as prospective members are majoring or minoring in an environmental degree, they are eligible for admittance. For any questions about the program, ask your advisor, the faculty in the Center for the Environment, or visit the Center’s website:
