catawbapioneerstaff April 14, 2016 0 COMMENTSThey say that an effective leader is the one to take initiative and make change. On April 5th, 2016, the National Society of Leadership and Success chapter at Catawba College held its first ever Induction Ceremony. The National Society of Leadership and Success is a Leadership honor society founded by Gary Tuerack, a Cornell University graduate, whose goal was to create a lasting and positive change. The society’s mission is to build leaders who make a better world and help people achieve their goals. The Catawba College Chapter was established in the Fall 2014 semester by its current president, Payden Mitchell. Mitchell worked long hours and cooperated close with the corporate office of the society, which is located in New Jersey. In order to be member of the society, students were required to maintain a 2.5 GPA and be an upper classman. Invitations were sent out via mail to student’s home addresses. Once letters were sent, the Catawba College chapter received a good amount of interest from students on campus.
Every organizations needs a group of chapter leaders to make sure the chapter is fully functioning and beneficial to the student body on campus. Therefore, the student president took no time in making sure the Executive Board recruitment was put into action. Opening up the offer to all members of the chapter, Mitchell was able to acquire an additional 5 members to serve as chapter leaders for the academic year. These members included Sophomore Deep Dave as chapter Secretary; Freshman Gavin Wooten as Membership Outreach Chair; Senior Kimberly Newton as Success Networking Team coordinator; Senior Laura Washing as Social Events Chair; and Sophomore Christian Solis as Social Networking Chair.
Each student went through several steps towards induction into the society, along with receiving great insight to being an effective leader whether in the workforce, or their society. Some of these steps included an orientation meeting which introduced students to the organization and and what benefits it has to offer. 3 motivational speaker broadcasts where students had the opportunity to learn from emerging leaders around the nation. A leadership training day, and 3 Success networking team meetings where students set measurable goals for themselves and received peer feedback on how to achieve them. Throughout the course of the year, the chapter at Catawba College held approximately 35 of these events to help students complete the steps towards Induction and be inspiring leaders on their college campus.
