Last week, Catawba hosted its annual Catawbapalooza event. There were exciting events all week long. At each event, students were given a free gift for attending but you had to show up early if you wanted one! Some of the prizes were a plastic ID cardholder, a collapsible Frisbee, and an orange Mason jar cup. This year’s theme was Small Town USA.

The Monday night event was high stakes bingo with the grand prize of a 32” TV. Other prizes ranged from the Disney movie Frozen on DVD to a Taco Bell gift card, to a big box of 24 mini Pringle cans.

Tuesday’s event was Lip Sync where people competed to win $125 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place, and $75 for 3rd place. Even Reverend Dr. Clapp joined in on the fun, lip-syncing a Frank Sinatra song. The first place winners, DJ Colson, Justin Burroughs, and Zach Burroughs did a Jackson 5/Michael Jackson mash-up.

Wednesday, the movie Frozen was projected outside on a large screen out on the Abernathy Quad. There were also small bonfires and supplies for people to make s’mores.

On Thursday, there was a woman-less beauty pageant. Seven brave men dressed up as women and strutted their wigs, make-up, and dresses down a cat walk. They also performed a talent; these talents ranged from shag dancing, to booty-shaking, to selfie-taking. The first place winner was Cinnamon, also known as Elon Edwards.

On Friday, DAS and Delphi hosted a luau. There was free barbecue from College Barbecue on Statesville Boulevard, free airbrush tattoos, and free Italian ice. Students could hula hoop, play sand volleyball and corn hole, and dance along to the live steel drum band.

Saturday wrapped up the marvelous week with a full fledged carnival, hosted right here on Catawba’s campus. There were spinning rides, flex flyers, a rock wall, a bounce house, a mechanical bull, sumo wrestling, green screen photos, and the Hogway Speedway. To eat, there were fresh fried apple pies, onion straws, and ribbon fries, burgers, and ice cream. You could also enter to win a chance to go in the cash cube. Someone was picked every 15 minutes to go in the small box. The goal was to grab as much money as possible in the 20 seconds you were given. The catch was that you were in an enclosed box with wind blowing the money everywhere and you could only use your hands to catch it, not using the wall.  There were also intramural corn hole and sand volleyball games going on throughout the event. In all, it was a great week full of lots of fun, and events for everyone that helped ease the tension of exam week starting soon.
