The Catawba Indians women’s basketball team defeated Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon 56-47. The Indians got off to a slow start as the Eagles got the opening tip off and started out fast with a 3 pointer to open the game. Carson-Newman started the game on a 7-0 run before the Indians finally scored after a Catawba timeout on a lay-up made by freshman Jada Huntley. After the lay-up that was made by Huntley, the Indians continued their strong push to take the lead and the Indians went on a 7-0 run to make the game 7-7 after a 3 point play the “old fashioned way” by junior Chloe Bully.

Catawba would continue their push to take the lead in the first half led by junior Chloe Bully, whose lay-up would give Catawba the lead at the 13:27 mark. The game was close after the 10 minute mark as the Indians and Eagles would trade baskets. The final 2 minutes of the first half would be very eventful as the Indians took a 25-23 lead into the final 2 minutes of play in the first half, but at the 1:54 mark of the first half Carson-Newman would take the lead, 26-25 on a 3 pointer. Catawba sophomore Janna Dixon would give the Indians the lead on jumper with 42 seconds remaining in the first half  and after 1 of 2 free throws made by Dixon, the Indians would take a 28-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Catawba continued their strong play as they scored the first points of the second half after a steal and a lay-up by Jada Huntley. Catawba started the half on a 4-0 scoring run and they would not look back as they maintained their lead throughout the second half. Carson-Newman would make one final push during the final five minutes of the game cutting the Indians lead to just 3 points. Carson-Newman would get no closer to the Indians lead than 3 as two key free throws by junior Mallary Clay at the 2:28 mark would push the Indians lead to 52-45. The Indians would hold the lead and win by the final score of 56-47.

The Indians were led in the victory by junior Chloe Bully, who had 24 points and freshman Jada Huntley, who had 7 points. Jada Huntley also led the Indians in rebounding with eight. Junior Chloe Bully led the Indians in the assist department with two.

The Indians next play on Wednesday night at home against Queens at 6 P.M. The Indians overall record is now 9-9 and their conference record is  7-7.
