Last Saturday was a great day for Catawba basketball fans. Both the men’s and women’s teams managed to defeat rival Mars Hill.
The women’s basketball team this year has been fairly successful in their past few home games. They managed to beat Mars Hill 79 – 66. Junior Bri Johnson scored 27 of the points and was the lead scorer for the game.
The men’s team has not been as lucky as the women’s this season, but they have still been fairly successful overall. Having lost a heavy battle in their last home game against Newberry College, the Catawba men’s basketball team brought their A-game this past weekend. The men held a small lead against Mars Hill for most of the game, but the excitement of the crowd truly started to grow within the final 5 minutes. By this time, Catawba had created a substantial lead against Mars Hill and was within the 90’s point range. Catawba fans sat at the edge of their seats and began cheering and wishing for the 100th team point. Mars Hill, whose team had been fighting desperately for the entire game to retake the lead, seemed to have lost all hope in the game as the 100th point was sunk in the final minute. The game ended 100-77. This is Catawba’s first time reaching 100 points in a game this season.
The next Catawba home basketball games will be held on Wednesday, February the 3rd, with the women’s game starting promptly at 6 PM and the men’s game starting at 8 PM.
