If you did not get a chance to see Catawba College’s Outrages Dance Project, you sure missed out on a breathtaking experience. This year, Catawba decided to collaborate with ballet Pensacola once again in an effort to dance whilst telling different stories throughout the show. ODP (Outrageous Dance Project) was directed by two Catawba Alumni this year. Meredith Fox who graduated in the year 2007, and is now working as the assistant professor of Musical Theatre and Dance right here at Catawba College. Working along with her is Richard Steinert, who graduated in the year 1981, a former Catawba Indian who is now the proud artistic director of Ballet Pensacola.
The show had so many different types of dance, from regular ballet, to even incorporating a musical theatre piece, these amazing performance had a little bit of everything. My absolute favorite part of the whole show was the piece done by our very own Catawba college students called the Mandala. Not only was the lighting for this piece extraordinary, but the way that the ensemble moved as one made the audience see optical illusions during the show. The dancers moved in ways that seemed impossible, yet beautiful. The whole Catawba College cast had been rehearsing for the Outrageous Dance Project since the beginning of this semester. Months and months of rehearsal, exercise, dieting, and learning, all came down to that night. The next Outrageous Dance Project will premier in the year 2018, and the theme for the Show is Alice and Wonderland. Students are already stoked and so anxious to see what the next ODP has in store for them, and knowing the hard working faculty and students of Catawba College, it will just keep getting better from here.
