Catawba Students have had a variety of things to rejoice about this snowy week, including less traffic while walking to class. Last week, The North Carolina Department of Transportation officially closed a section of West Innes Street just past the President’s house to fix the bridge over Grants Creek.

On the first few days that the roads were shut down, students watched in amusement as several cars were forced to make U-turns after missing the clearly marked detour and road closed signs. Even several large shipping trucks had to make dangerous U-turns.

However, after a few days of havoc, the news of the road closure was spread and West Innes Street became exceptionally quiet. Catawba college students used to have to wait for several cars before they could safely cross the street, but now they can travel across the road without fear of cars since there are barely any. This newly quiet and barren street is a well liked and appreciated change to the students making their daily commutes.

In fact, the newly calm West Innes Street is expected to remain desolate for the rest of the school year because construction is suppose to last well into the end of August, according to Catawba’s website. This may sound like bad news for some Salisbury drivers who drive that route every day, but the detour around the construction site only adds about 4 minutes to their route, which is a minor inconvenience to finally have that bridge fixed.
